What Are Our Children Watching?

As parents, one of the most valuable gifts we give our children is clarity. Every child deserves the feeling of confidence and certainty that the life he was gifted is the one and only. Free from anxiety and worry that maybe otherwise would have been better.

The biggest challenge we face in this generation is the internet: An endless stream of content, mainly videos, of people, thoughts or places, we don't want our children interacting with. And boy are our children suffering from that.

I did something with my wife, which I encourage you to do the same. I'm not good at math, but this calculation was simple.

We jotted down on a paper simple values we would like to embedd in our children. Frumkeit, Chassidishkeit. Even more general, honesty, modestly in behavior, modesty in dress, the list goes on.

We decided that anything which opposes any of these values, our children shouldn't be exposed to. Simple math.

If we want our children to live a life of modesty, let's not expose them to those who don't live like that. If want them to grow viewing Yiddishkeit as something sacred, let's not allow them to watch those who think it's a joke.

For example, "vlogging" is from the top viewed categories on YouTube for ages 5-15. Vlogging means the given influencer isn't making videos of anything specific; rather just giving their viewers a look into their lives and the cool things they do. As such, their values, the things and people they admire, their modesty, their lifestyle are on full display.

That's very conflicting for a child who's being raised on opposing values.

The same goes for all other types of entertainment. Gaming, reactions, or anything. You don't have to be a professor to realize the negative messages and values that are given over on the average video on the Internet.

If you barely trust your son's teacher at school, don't trust some random 22 yr old influencer on YouTube. Just don't.

If you don't want your children cursing, don't expose them to people who do. If you don't want your teenagers hanging out in mixed social groups, don't show them people who do.

It's simple math.
