Is it my Fault That People are Ignorant?
Why Is the Point System Punishing Us for the Truth?
We all want Inyonim to be a high-quality platform, and points are a great way to encourage people to contribute. But right now, the system feels like it's working against the very people who are trying to keep the site honest.
The way that the point system is currently set up is as follows:
Published Articles +10 pts
Upvotes Received +2 pts
Comments +5 pts (per 10)
Downvotes Received -1 pt
Downvotes Given -1 pt
The "Downvote" Double Standard
The most confusing part of this list is the penalty for giving a downvote. If I see a post that is factually wrong, why am I being punished for flagging it?
It's enough that I lost brain cells over the post. Now I need to lose points too?
By taking away a point every time we downvote, the system is essentially saying: "Ignore the bad content, or it’ll cost you." It shouldn't be my fault—or yours—that someone else wrote something stupid. If we want to keep the standards of the site high, we should be encouraged to weed out the bad stuff, not taxed for it.
Then there’s the issue of losing points when others downvote us. We know how things work online: sometimes people downvote because they disagree with a hard truth or an unpopular opinion, even if what was written is 100% correct.
Why should a writer lose points just because they wrote a truth that was "too hard" for someone else to hear?
The logic seems to be that if you get rid of the penalty for receiving downvotes, you have to get rid of the penalty for giving them too. Fine. Let’s do exactly that.
Let the points reflect the positive contributions we make—like writing articles and getting upvotes—without these "hidden taxes" that punish us for trying to keep the feed clean or for speaking our minds.
It's time for the Vaad to look at the math and fix what’s broken.
Oh, and one last thing, we should give points for every comment in the comment section. If people found your article intriguing enough to comment, you should get credit for that.
End Rant (for now)
