Derher Club

Before this wonderful platform was created I once wrote a short piece on a long flight. Comments appreciated.

Several years ago, (back when I was in my local high school - every bochur is part of Derher Club the Seder Iyun after the fresh-smelling glossy pages arrive) I had this wild idea. Nothing came of it, and maybe that's a good thing. But I'll share it anyway, and I'd love to hear the thoughts of the esteemed readership.

(Minor edits and redactions have been made. My sincerest apologies.)

Column idea: Beis Harav.

Short biographies about people in Beis Harav, further than the usual Vov Tishrei - Chof Beis Shevat - Yud Gimmel Iyar - Chof Av articles.

The average Lubavitcher, and especially if the magazine is targeted to people on the fringes, have extremely limited knowledge when it comes to Beis Harav. Even those familiar with Shalsheles Hayachas are clueless about anything beyond the names and families.

Think Maharil (the Rebbe wrote a biography about him), Reb Boruch Sholom, Rabash, Reb Avrohom Dovid Lavut (already been touched upon in Timely Titles), Reb Meir Shlomo Yanovsky (past two were both discussed briefly in the article about Nikolaev, but can still use an article), Raza, Reb Mendel, Ramal, Reb Moshe Horenstein, Reb Avrohom Schneerson, Reb Bentzion Schneerson, (redacted), Reb Mendel Horenstein etc. These are all more known family members, if the column works out they can get to some of the more obscure personalities.

Yes, some of them may have had various "issues", but the gatekeeping in Derher is so tight that there's absolutely nothing to worry about. Especially with the aid of the esteemed and distinguished Editor-In-Chief, member of the central board of extracurricular studies for Chabad yeshivahs around the world, and our favorite podcaster the esteemed director, protector of the shita hakdosha. And just in case they miss anything, the other editors are each worthy of reliance in their own right.

Oh, whoops. Forget that all. We could never. Chas V'Sholom.

Recent magazine had an article about Reb Nochum, the son of the Mitteler Rebbe. Maybe they are looking into this after all.

And Mendy Greenberg, you rock. Keep up the good work.
